Welsh-born
songstress for Anzac service By John Cousins The Omokoroa resident who rode the bandwagon of pop success in Britain during the 1970s will sing God Defend New Zealand, Lest We Forget, It's a Long Way to Tipperary and, an as-yet undecided song when the wreaths are laid. She will be accompanied by a brass band. Her appearance at the memorial service demonstrates a wide variety of singing styles honed on the English stage. On Saturday night she entertained at the Cascades Gardens, singing nostalgic country songs to a packed house. Demand for tickets was so strong that another concert has been scheduled for April The petite blonde grew up in a small village near Bangor. At 18 she left for London to make her fortune. She scored a No 2 hit in the British pop charts with the song that shot her to fame on the televised singing contest Opportunity Knocks. She entertained alongside many of the great names of British show biz, including Tom Jones, Cliff Richard and Morecambe and Wise. She first visited New Zealand in 1990 while returning to the United Kingdom from Australia. She planned to emigrate to Australia but preferred New Zealand and bought into a quiet Omokoroa cul-de-sac. She became a New Zealand citizen last September. |
